Herald to split Goal is to sharpen local focus

Coverage of the West Hempstead community will shift to a new paper, the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald.
"We've listened to readers and advertisers who repeatedly request more focused coverage of their communities," said Herald publisher Cliff Richner. "Community, is, after all, our middle name. You're not reading your local Herald to find out what's going on in Iraq or Manhattan -- or in the next town over, for that matter. If your home is in Franklin Square and your kids go to school there, you don't necessarily care about the library in West Hempstead, or who's getting married in Lynbrook," he said.
Subscribers living in Franklin Square, ZIP code 11010, and Elmont, ZIP code 11003, will automatically receive the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald, unless they contact the Herald's circulation department at (516) 569-4000, ext. 7, or email MyChoice@LIHerald.com, with different instructions. Similarly, subscribers in West Hempstead, ZIP code 11552, will begin receiving the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald on March 4, unless they contact the Herald circulation department. Advertisements and fliers inserted in the Herald over the next several weeks (see page __ of this week's paper) contain a more detailed explanation of the split and how to contact the Herald's circulation department if you wish to receive a paper different from (or in addition to) the one that covers your home town or you do not reside within the papers' primary coverage area.
The other Herald newspaper affected by the realignment is the Village Herald, which presently covers three villages: East Rockaway, Lynbrook and Malverne. The paper will now be known as the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald. Malverne coverage will now appear in the new Malverne/West Hempstead Herald.
Herald Executive Editor John O'Connell has announced that Jerry Burke will be the editor of the Franklin Square/Elmont edition, Jonann Brady will edit the Malverne/West Hempstead edition and Karen Lynne Barone will edit the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald.
The new configuration will also give advertisers the choice of focusing on one particular location, or picking and choosing among the 15 Herald Community newspapers which cover most of southern Nassau, said Richner. For information on advertising in Herald Community Newspapers, contact the advertising department at (516) 569-4000, ext. 6. If you have news or community calendar listings you'd like to appear in one of the new papers call the number above and ask for the editor.
