Former vice president Stephanie Gould replaced Howard Weinick as president of the board, while Stephen Witt replaced Gould as vice president during its annual reorganization meeting on July 8.
This is a board that has been very uniform in its vision for a caring learning environment, said Witt, who has been on the board since 1984 and has served as vice president from 1990 to 1996. The fact that we have new officers doesn't change that.
The change in officers allows others to gain exposure to the responsibilities of being an officer, Witt explained. Weinick, who has served as president since July 2004, will continue to serve the district as a member of the Board of Education.
I want to thank Howie for all the work he's done in the past five years, Gould said. Hes been a mentor to me.
Howie did such an excellent job as president because he represented the vision of the board so well, Witt added.
Witt emphasized that the Board of Education will continue to focus on the total child, which includes concerning themselves with more than just academic issues.
The board doesnt play as big of a role as when I first started, said Witt, who added that county legislators have restricted the authority of boards of education. We still have a lot of influence because we represent the interests of our community for education.
