Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library budget passes
Adler, Zaret elected to board of trustees

The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library held its budget vote and trustee election on Tuesday at the library.
The 2009-10 budget was passed by District 14 residents, with 287 in favor and 133 in opposition. The Board of Trustees of the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library proposed a library budget for 2009-10 that included an increase in the amount of taxes raised through local property taxes for the library of .93 percent. Included in this amount is a decrease in personnel costs through the elimination of one librarian position as well as the reorganization of library staff. With the budget passing, an additional $5,000 will be provided for the continued acquisition of electronic resources or databases, which may be accessed in the library or remotely from residents' homes and offices.
"The passage of the library's budget insures the continuation of all library services and maintains a solid foundation for the future," said Susan O. de Sciora, the library's director.
There were also two library trustee positions on the ballot. David Adler ran unopposed and received 337 votes. He has been elected to a five-year term.
In the only contested trustee election, Frank Zaret defeated Pamela Bluth. Zaret obtained 226 votes to Bluth's 179. Zaret will complete the unexpired term of Susan Warner, who resigned as of December 31, 2008. That term ends June 30, 2011.
The Board of Trustees now has its full complement of five members: the two new electees along with Benjamin Eilbott, Shari Braverman and Donald Davidson.
