Hewlett-Woodmere School District will reopen for classes on Wednesday, officials said. However, Lawrence Superintendent Gary Schall said the district remains closed. The Number Four School and the middle and high school have power, he said.

Schall said that when, "an effective and safe plan can be devised," district schools will be reopened. The Lawrence Teachers Association and Parent-Teacher Association will be part of those discussions, he added. The safety and welfare of the students is the main priority, Schall said. After a plan is created, the district will also continue providing assistance to the schools that are a part of the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, which are now using Lawrence Middle School.

"A plan for limited nonpublic transportation school to local nonpublic schools that are open will be announced [Wednesday], Schall said. "Five Towns Community Center is an official Red Cross habitation center with food, clothing, and sleeping accommodations."

Though the Lawrence schools are not open for class, social workers will be available to meet with residents starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at all the school buildings. Atlantic Beach residents will have social workers available at Village Hall, 65 The Plaza, in Atlantic Beach, Schall said.

Hewlett-Woodmere district also reported on its website that the SAT exam that was to be given at Hewlett High School on Nov. 3 was postponed until Nov. 17.

The Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway reopened on Monday. The Brandeis School in Lawrence remains closed. Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls in Hewlett reopened Tuesday. A fire broke out in the building. It was extinguished, but the students were sent home for the day.

Lawrence Woodmere Academy reopened on Monday as an optional day for those students and faculty who are able to attend. School officials said they don’t know if buses will be available.

Chabad of the Five Towns at 74 Maple Ave. in Cedarhurst, has power and is open to the community for food, a place to get warm and recharge cell phones. It also has WiFi.
