The 2020 edition of the U.S. News & World Report’s annual hospital rankings has recognized Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside as “high performing” in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and endocrinology, heart failure, orthopedics and urology.

“Our ranking is a direct result of our ongoing commitment to excellence in patient-centered care and acknowledges our dedicated team of physicians, nurses and support staff, all of whom worked so tirelessly this year during the Covid-19 pandemic,” MSSN President and CEO Richard J. Murphy said. “Now more than ever, this recognition for our specialized care services is especially meaningful, and I am tremendously proud of our team for earning this honor.”

MSSN is the Long Island flagship hospital of the world-renowned Mount Sinai Health System. The Mount Sinai Hospital is ranked No. 14 nationally by U.S. News & World Report. Its Department of Geriatrics earned the No. 1 spot in the nation in geriatrics, and five specialties are ranked among the nation’s elite hospitals: cardiology/heart surgery (No. 6); gastroenterology/GI surgery (No. 9); diabetes/endocrinology (No. 11); nephrology (No. 12); and neurology/neurosurgery (No. 12).

New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, America’s oldest specialty hospital — celebrating its 200th anniversary this year and one of the world’s leading facilities for the treatment of diseases of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat — was nationally ranked in ophthalmology at No. 11.

Now in its 28th year, the U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or added risk because of other health problems or age. To produce the rankings, U.S. News evaluates data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult specialties, nine adult procedures and conditions and 10 pediatric specialties. To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients.

“This recognition is a direct result of our team’s collaboration and commitment to excellence,” Dr. Adhi Sharma, MSSN’s chief medical officer and executive vice president of clinical and professional affairs. “The U.S. News & World Report recognition is among the most respected in the industry and is a testament to our mission to treat our patients with leading-edge medical technologies and adhere to the highest standards in patient safety and care.”
