For the Sailors, the game still held some promise at the start of the second quarter, as they drove down field after a 33-yard play-action touchdown pass by Baldwin quarterback Casey Carroll to receiver Will Barrow for the game's first score. Starting from Oceanside's 38-yard line, Sailors quarterback Matt Wynn brought his team to Baldwin's 8-yard line, only to throw his second interception when Carroll, playing defensive back, picked the ball off in the end zone to halt the drive.
Carroll turned back into a quarterback and took his team 93 yards for their second touchdown. Along the way he hit Barrow for a pair of first-down passes, and running back Efosa Guobadia carried the ball in from the 10 to put the Bruins up 14-0.
With 7:21 left in the second quarter, the Bruins never looked back and the Sailors never went beyond mid-field.
In the next series, after Baldwin's defense forced Oceanside to punt deep in their own end, Carroll hit Barrow for a 35-yard reception down the left sideline to the 5. From there, running back Ronnie Thomas took the ball in on a pitch and gave his team a three-touchdown lead.
The Sailors' only bright spot on the sunny, unseasonably warm day came when their defense prevented the Bruins from turning the score up 28-0 at halftime, as Baldwin drove to within Oceanside's 10, but were stopped as time ran out. During the Bruins' attack within the red zone, Sailors defensive back Steve McKeith tackled their runners, chased down their quarterback and defended well against the pass.
To seal their victory, the Bruins came out in the second half with a passing attack that ended with Carroll hooking up with Barrow in the end zone on a 5-yard toss. On their next series, the Bruins executed a succession of first downs on runs and passes that once again culminated with Carroll connecting for a third touchdown with Barrow, who was left wide open near the end zone.
The Bruins final score came after Oceanside misfired a snap on another punt deep in their own territory. The Bruins began their shortest drive at the Sailors 9-yard line with Mike Hoover replacing Carroll under center. With 25 seconds left in the third quarter, Hoover threw the game's final score to receiver Pete Vanderdrift.
Carroll went 14 of 19 for 264 yards and three touchdowns to Barrow, who had 137 yards.
After losing 28-2 to Uniondale in the season opener and 20-14 to Plainview last week, the Sailors drop to 0-3 and to last place in Conference I. The Bruins' victory marks their second straight shutout and blowout, having beaten Uniondale 40-0 in week two, and their 3-0 record ties them for first place in the conference with Freeport and Farmingdale.
