Hornet flies west

More than 50 friends, family members and Green Hornets staff gathered at Buckley's Bar last Friday to bid farewell to one of the staples of Green Hornets football and thank him for everything he has done for the organization. Mayor Ed Cahill and Councilman Jim Darcy, a former Green Hornet who played for Bobby's father, were on hand to present Hawkey with an appreciation award for his unwavering dedication to the youth of Valley Stream.
"He's had a great career in Valley Stream," Cahill said. "We're not saying good-bye, but so long and thank you for everything you've done for Valley Stream."
Hawkey's wife, Vivian, has been an actress for the past 20 years and recently landed a role on ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money." Over the past two years, Hawkey visited his wife on the weekends and whenever he had free time, but the distance between them got to be too much. Hawkey, who works in food sales, found potential job opportunities out west through his California accounts and decided last year he would finally make the move. The two recently bought a house in Hollywood.
When asked what he would miss most about Valley Stream, he quickly replied, "the football and my family." This will be the farthest he has ever lived from his family and admitted they were upset over the move. Hawkey said he hopes he can coach football in California, but nonetheless, the void left by his absence in the Green Hornets is immeasurable.
"He's been a God-send to the organization and we are at a loss without him," said Danny Kane, who grew up with Hawkey and coached with him over the last six years. "We're going to miss him. He was an integral part of molding lives in Valley Stream. He's a good man."
