Lenzo, 82, has been involved with the community garden for the past 12 years, constantly cleaning the area of rocks to keep the garden blooming. He was always involved with the other residents who came to the gardens, and is appreciative of their help with cleaning and planting.
"When I saw my name on the sign that morning I wondered why they put up my name, there are other people involved" Lenzo said. "But from what I understand, one of [the other residents] told the mayor to put my name up there since I've been cleaning up there since the beginning. I was very surprised."
Now a retired sewing machine operator, Lenzo goes to the garden two or three times a week to clean and help out. "I get a lot of help out there," he said. "There are a lot of people there always helping me out now."
The community of Lynbrook created the Lynbrook Community Gardens in the late 1980's on a piece of land at the end of Wright Avenue, located off of busy Merrick Road. The garden has around 40 plots and has garden tools available for community members to come and plant vegetables and fruits.
The garden is a great place for residents who live in local apartments, or those who do not have the space to grow a garden on their own property.
