Human Relations Day at OHS

Human Relations Day at Oceanside High School takes students out of their ordinary lives to expose students to people and experiences they may not have encountered personally.

Keese Chess, OHS alumnus, is a first-generation college graduate who earned his degree from Johnson and Wales’ culinary arts college. Keese described the persistence that landed him a spot on the Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race and shared career advice. Another alumnus, Stephen Dodge shared his long and painful struggle with alcoholism and rehab, a talk he also gave to parents at a DAWC meeting earlier this month.

Topics included addiction, hunger and homelessness right here on Long Island, surviving the holocaust, understanding other religions, the challenges people with disabilities face, what a Peace Corps volunteer does, and the importance of persistence in achieving goals, among many others. Speakers came from advocacy organizations and veterans groups and also included OHS’ staff, students and alumni.
