After two meetings hosted by Toback and Zapson, residents expressed both interest in and disapproval of the idea. Those opposed have accused Toback and Zapson of failing to provide all the facts. But while it's true that Toback's presentation lacked some information, the general idea and the facts that do exist aren't all bad.
One of the most significant components of an incorporated village is its closeness, the opportunity for residents to have a stronger voice in their community. That's something Oceanside lacks. In fact, in recent years the incorporation meetings in January and February have drawn larger crowds than any other Town of Hempstead meeting held in Oceanside.
Toback has said that incorporation would bring Oceanside an identity, something it has been lacking for a long time. It would also bring unity, leadership, and village officers to be held accountable for community concerns. Oceanside wouldn't have to have its own police department, and wouldn't have to have a village hall right away (something residents were concerned about). Residents wouldn't be subjected to an extra layer of government, as some might lead others to believe. In fact, incorporation would eliminate fire and sanitation commissioners and reduce the role of the Town of Hempstead.
Before incorporation can go any further, there is much more to understand, more information that's needed in order for residents to proceed. Toback has formed a committee to incorporate Oceanside, made up of residents who are interested in researching and seeing this effort through. Although some may not like Toback's methods, he has taken an active role in the community. He has been visible and has faced the wrath of angry residents.
Which begs the question, Where is the Town of Hempstead in all this? What is its position, and why? Despite several attempts to reach Councilman Anthony Santino (R-East Rockaway) the Herald's calls went unreturned. We did, however, arrange a meeting with two town aids. Although they were willing to address incorporation, Santino has been avoiding any official statement on the matter.
The Herald has not taken an official position on the possible incorporation because we have not heard from all sides. We have heard residents' concerns, but we want to hear why officials who don't support incorporation believe it's a bad idea. If there are good reasons why Oceanside shouldn't be a village, the Town of Hempstead needs to enumerate them in an official statement. Given such a potentially momentous decision, everyone's cards must be on the table for all to see.
