Interim super namedMeierdiercks tapped to lead Sewanhaka through June 2007

Meierdiercks takes over for Dr. John Williams, who announced in May he was resigning effective Aug. 31. Meierdiercks has been given the title of deputy superintendent of schools while he transitions under Williams, and will be interim superintendent from Sept. 1 through June 30, 2007.
"I'm flattered that there was interest from the board and that they offered me the position," Meierdiercks said. "I'm excited. I very much look forward to it and my heart's in this district."
Meierdiercks is in his 33rd year with Sewanhaka, the only district in which he's worked. He began his career as a business teacher at Sewanhaka High School and later served as business department chairman. He's worked in the central office for 24 years and as the business chief
for 20 years. Raised in Elmont, Meierdiercks graduated from Alva T.
Stanforth School - site of the new Elmont Library - and Sewanhaka High School. He earned his bachelor's degree from Hofstra University, his
master's degree in teaching from Adelphi University and his master's in
education administration from Pace University.
Williams, who said he will continue his day-to-day duties as superintendent while easing Meierdiercks into the role, said his replacement is ideal because he brings an extensive business background to a position that is becoming increasingly important.
"Warren has been working on construction of the budget for a long time," Williams said. "On Long Island, in this time frame, you need close scrutiny of the budget, of all the purchases, and he's been great at that."
While Meierdiercks becomes familiar with his new position, the board will look to fill his old one. He said the board is searching for an interim assistant superintendent of finance.
Meierdiercks's appointment was approved by the board, 6-2, with Archie Cheng and Robert Burke - both of the Floral Park-Bellerose Board of Education - casting dissenting votes. As the Herald reported on June 8, sources close to the Sewanhaka board said Meierdiercks was the top choice from the moment Williams stepped down on May 23. The sources also said that Meierdiercks is a candidate to become Williams's permanent successor.
Would Meierdiercks accept if he were tapped to be Sewanhaka's third superintendent in the last 21 years?
"If the board is happy with my services and offers me the opportunity to continue, I'd definitely welcome the opportunity," he said.
