Inwood offers great golf, more

Nestled in the farthest reaches of southwestern Nassau County, Inwood Country Club is widely considered one of the finest golf courses in all of New York State.

While teeing off is only part of the scene at Inwood — membership includes use of a beautiful private beach club on the Atlantic Ocean, 10 immaculate Har-tru tennis courts and a fitness club — the course’s illustrious history, challenging holes and picturesque views offer an unforgettable golfing experience.

“One of the best things about the course is it plays differently every day based on the strength and direction of the wind,” Membership Chairman Michael Klein said. “I try to play three or four times a week, and it’s never the same. It’s always a great challenge.”

The course, located adjacent to Jamaica Bay and Kennedy Airport, is one of the oldest on Long Island and you can turn back time just by entering the main driveway. Originally established as a nine-hole course in 1901, it was expanded to 18 five years later and soon played host to two major professional tournaments.

Inwood was the site of the 1921 PGA Championship, won by Walter Hagen, as well as the 1923 U.S. Open, won by Bobby Jones in a playoff round over Bobby Cruickshank. On the decisive hole of the playoff, the 425-yard 18th, Jones hit a magnificent approach shot from 200 yards out that landed six feet from the cup and led to his first of 18 major wins. A monument stands where Jones hit one of the most memorable shots in the history of American golf.

“You can’t play the 18th without glancing at the monument,” Klein said. “I think everyone who’s played here has dropped a ball [near the monument] and tried the Jones shot.”

Layout of the course is unique. Par is 37 on the front nine, and 34 on the back nine. Three consecutive par-5s (holes 3-5) are followed by back-to-back par-3s on the front, while seven par-4s, including the last four, highlight the back. A club championship tournament is held every August, Klein said, and 2011 winner Matt Fraas will soon be out to defend his title.

Fraas and other club members have a large list of available amenities at their disposal. There are many fine dining options, women’s and children’s clinics offered to tennis enthusiasts, family BBQs at the beach club, party and event rooms, and guest suites.
