School may have been out for the summer but students had many opportunities to stay active and connected thanks to the Island Park Schools summer recreation program. The program ran through July and August, at Lincoln Orens Middle School.
The program included a number of field trips to the library, Shell Creek Park and the Queens Zoo.
The program offered swim instruction, which was another big highlight. Each age group visited Masone Beach once a week, during which swim safety and lessons were offered as well as activities, including kayaking.
Students kept their minds sharp in fun ways through educational computer games and story times.
A big emphasis was placed on teamwork through sports activities and Spirit Week. Students supported their teams of blue and gold by wearing the respective colors, created banners and recited cheers.
A total of 244 students attended either as campers or counselors-in-training. Those from pre-k through eighth-grade took part in the full camp experience, while 17 seventh- through tenth-graders were counselors in training and gained leadership experiences that will be useful in future jobs.
