Tree down on Briarwood Ct. in Rockville Centre at about 7 a.m. RVC DPW workers were moving it off the street by 9 a.m. while the storm was still bearing down.

Streets were deserted, and with good reason, in East Rockaway on Sunday.
Sunday update: Weather forecasters have downgraded Hurricane Irene to tropical storm strength Sunday morning. While the rains are diminishing, the winds remain very strong and flooding remains are serious problem. Driving is dangerous and not advised, and thee Town of Hempstead is reporting that power is out in the town for as many as 300,000 residents. The town also reported 65 trees down on public roads, but no doubt many more on private property.
The county executive, Ed Mangano, reported Sunday morning at 10 a.m. that there were 20 transmission lines down in the county.
