Thousands turn out for Irish Day parade and festival in the West End

It was a great day for the Irish and everyone else who celebrated Irish Day in Long Beach this past Saturday, October 2.

Thousands took part in celebrating the Ancient Order of Hibernians 21st annual Irish Day Parade and Festival. Grand Marshal Larry Elovich marched with Congressman Peter King, as bagpipes and drums echoed throughout the West End.

Prior to the event, a Mass was held at Sacred Heart Church in Island Park, just before numerous groups — including the Long Beach Bulldogs, the Michelle O’Neill Foundation and West End Neighbors Civic Association, among many other groups and organizations — took part in the parade, which kicked off at Washington Boulevard.

City Manager Charles Theofan, City Council Vice President Mona Goodman and City Council members John McLaughlin, Mike Fagen and Len Torres joined marchers that included the Ancient Order of Hibernians, veterans’ groups, members of the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments and many other organizations. There were rides and games for children, and plenty of vendors selling food and merchandise lined Beech Street.

“The day is meant to celebrate our Irish heritage,” said Brian Sharkey, president of the A.O.H. Division 17 in Long Beach. “But it also gives the community groups some exposure and highlights what is good about Long Beach.”
