So my knowledge of Malverne and West Hempstead was limited to one night a year there for 18 years and then Christmas Eve dinner was moved to my home in Woodbury. Yes, the North Shore, borderline Suffolk County at that. I hope this tidbit of information about your local paper-s new editor inspires you to deluge the Herald with information about yourself, your neighbors, other people who make up this wonderful community and the issues that are important to you.
The first thing I do every day at the office is check the paper-s mailbox, e-mail box and voice mail, and I-m disappointed to report that most days, there-s no mail. When there is, it-s usually from the school district, the Town of Hempstead or some other impersonal entity that I don-t believe are the most important things to you.
I want to hear what you think, and report your concerns, your joys and your boiling anger to the rest of the community. Who knows? Maybe there-s someone out there who feels the same way as you, and will be thankful to see it in writing, whether you write it yourself in a letter to the editor, or inspire a story in the paper. This is your paper, and I-m here to tell your stories, but you have let me know about them. Call me at (516) 569-400 ext. 205, e-mail KSalute@liherald.com, or track me down and at town, civic and school board meetings. If there-s a meeting you-d like me to attend, let me know, and I-ll be there, too.
A perfect instance of an issue that requires your opinion: Who in the Malverne/West Hempstead community deserves to be named the Herald-s Person of the Year, and why? We can-t guarantee that your pick will be ours, but your nomination will certainly help guide us in the right direction. The best candidates for Person of the Year are people who do good things for the community at large, not because they have to or because they-re paid to do so, but because they-re genuinely good people who go above and beyond volunteering, spending countless hours dedicating themselves to a good cause. Simply and concisely tell me who you think should be Person of the Year and why, and send it to Malverne/West Hempstead Herald, P.O. Box 9001, Lawrence, N.Y. 11559-0220.
