It's harvest time in Lynbrook

A visit to Tony Lenzo Community Gardens

Posted

Tony Lenzo, 83, of Lynbrook, has been tending to the Lynbrook Community Gardens — since named after him — for the last 14 years.

“People come, plant, and weed,” Lenzo said of the 38 gardening plots. “Some come back to take care of it more than others ... but it is still beautiful this year.”

The overgrown was evident and colorful, with red tomatoes, deep-green cucumbers, purple-black eggplant, basil, peppers, okra -- and Lenzo’s favorite -- a large fig  tree with sweet, ripe fruit.

The garden plots are  at the end of Wright Avenue off of Merrick Road (near Wendy’s) and for a small fee, residents can rent a plot with use of a hose and gardening tools.
