Kaufman, Feldfamer win; District 15 budget passes
Private-school parents still outnumber public-school parents, six to one, on the Lawrence Board of Education following Tuesday's election although results remained unofficial as of Thursday afternoon, May 21, two days after the vote. Incumbent Uri Kaufman was elected to his second term on the board, and newcomer Abel Feldhamer, who ran unopposed, also captured a trustee seat.
According to unofficial results Thursday afternoon, Kaufman received 3,558 votes, just 135 more than his opponent, Barry Ringelheim. John Kinder, who sought Feldhamer's seat as a write-in, garnered 2,380 votes to Feldhamer's 3,612.
The Peninsula Public Library's five-year trustee seat went to incumbent Joseph Fuller, who ran unopposed and collected 2,652 votes.
The 2009-10 District 15 school budget of $91.68 million passed easily, receiving 4,078 votes. Next year's spending plan totals nearly $4 million less than the current budget.
Voters also supported the Peninsula Public Library budget of $2.5 million, an increase of 2.9 percent, with 4,016 voting for it and 882 opposing it.
