It's time to get fit, Valley Stream

After watching an episode of CNN’s “Heroes” last year, Marsha Guerrier learned of a woman who started a fit club in her town. That inspired the North Valley Stream resident to do the same in her community.

Guerrier, 36, is planning to start the Valley Stream Fit Club, and hopes to launch the group in the third week of January. Although she doesn’t know the specific health statistics of Valley Stream, she knows that obesity is a problem nationwide. “I know health-wise, as a country, we can do better,” she said.

And Guerrier said she is looking to get in better shape herself. She said the purpose of the fit club would be for members to support each other. Guerrier said sometimes people looking to lose weight and eat healthier, like herself, find better support from strangers rather than friends and family.

And being that it’s the new year, Guerrier said this is the perfect time to get the club off the ground. “This is resolution time,” she said, “and the top resolution is going to gym, working out, committing to eating healthier.”

Guerrier has already lined up a trainer, Nicole Littrean, who used to live in Valley Stream and now lives in Suffolk. Littrean is a certified cyclist trainer and is working toward her personal trainer license. She will dedicate several hours each week to the group and give ideas on how people can change their lives for the better through fitness.

Littrean said Guerrier’s idea for a fit club is a good one. “That brings people together because it’s a common interest that people have,” she said. “I think it’s going to be great for Valley Stream.”

Guerrier said she is still trying to secure a location for the group to meet, but said she expects that to be finalized soon. She also said there will be no fees to participate, only costs associated with any exercise equipment people may wish to purchase for their homes.
