JCC Benefactor Barry Friedberg dead at 94

Barry Friedberg, known to Oceanside and the surrounding area as the benefactor of the Friedberg Jewish Community Center on Neil Court, died on Oct. 26. He was 94.

Friedberg and his wife Florence, who died in 2014, were married for 72 years.

The Friedbergs were known for their philanthropy and generosity. He was a board member of both the Oceanside JCC and the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC in Boca Raton, Fl. In addition they supported the Lifelong Learning Society for adult learners on the Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic University, site of the Barry and Florence Friedberg Lifelong Learning Auditorium.

Born May 6, 1921, Friedberg was from the Bronx, lived in Elmont for many years, and then moved to Manhasset. He and his wife also lived in Boca Raton.

Friedberg was a photographer in the Army. His profession was bar mitzvah and wedding photography. He started Kordet Color Corporation at the Neil Court location.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Gutterman's Funeral Home in Woodbury, NY and services were held at B’nai Israel Temple in Elmont where he was an active member. He was laid to rest in Beth David Cemetery in Elmont on Oct. 28.

He is survived by his children Diane and Marc Houslanger, Richard Friedberg and Courtenay Dodge; her grandchildren Michelle Houslanger, Joseph Houslanger, Sarah and Max Krohn, Hannah and David Orowitz; and two great-grandchildren — Genevieve Krohn, and Oliver Orowitz.

“Barry and Florence’s compassion, kindness, leadership and philanthropy will be felt for generations to come in New York and Florida,” the Friedberg JCC said in a statement. The family requests donations be made to the Friedberg JCC at 15 Neil Court in Oceanside.
