Ryan Cook, 17, and Matthew Brustad, 17, both of West Babylon, and Richard Doyle, 16, of Lindenhurst removed a golf cart from the Woodmere Country Club in Woodsburgh and drove it recklessly across the golf course, ripping up sections of the greens, according to the Fourth Precinct police.
"The second and the sixteenth greens were damaged by [their driving the golf cart], and the golf cart itself was damaged when it was driven into the sandbunker at the sixteenth green, where the undercarriage was damaged and the golf cart flipped over," Det. Sgt. John Azata said.
The wild ride caused in excess of $1,000 in damages to the turf and greens of the golf course, say police.
Azata said there was no indication the defendants were intoxicated or high on drugs, but added, "There's no specific reason for the justification of doing this."
It looks like one boy, Ryan Cook, was at a friend's house in the Five Towns that night, and he and his friends parked there and went for a walk, said Sgt. John King.
After their ride on the course, the teens, who weren't harmed when the cart flipped, were caught on foot at Lotus Street in Cedarhurst within a block of the golf course, and arrested at 10:40 p.m. for criminal mischief in the third degree.
The Woodmere Country Club did not return a call to comment on the incident, and the families of the defendants were unavailable.
