The Rockville Centre Conservancy is sponsoring its first kayak outing on Hempstead Lake on June 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be three 45-minute sessions starting at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and at noon. Registered participants will meet in Hempstead Lake State Park’s Eagle Avenue entrance. The easiest way to access Eagle Avenue is to travel west on Lakeview Avenue, making the right turn north onto Peninsula Boulevard and using the turn around onto Eagle Avenue and into the park. You cannot access the lake from the Skelos Athletic Field parking lot. If walking or riding your bike, use the footbridges and go past the tennis courts to the second parking field.
Fees are $30 for a double kayak; $20 for a single kayak for which you must be 18 or older, and $5 if you bring your own kayak. Life vests are included. There is an $8 New York State Park parking fee. There are a limited number of kayaks, so register early to ensure your spot by visiting www.rvcconservancy.org and clicking on upcoming events. Checks made payable to RVCC, specifying a session, may be mailed or dropped off at Village Hall, One College Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. Rain date is June 24. For last minute questions, call (516) 606-8193.
The mission of the RVC Conservancy is to identify local public spaces that need attention, gather volunteer support and private funding and work with village government to restore and enhance trees, parks and the public spaces. Some projects are in the works; others require a longer vision. Pick a project that you’re interested in supporting, or nominate a project for consideration. The Conservancy values your help in improving our shared environment.
