Kelly Ann Tinyes killer seeking parole

Robert Golub, the Valley Stream resident who was convicted of killing his 13-year-old neighbor Kelly Ann Tinyes in April 1990, is applying for parole.

Golub, 46, is expected to make his first appearance before the parole board because he has completed his minimum 25 years of his 25-years to life sentence, said Linda Foglia, a spokeswoman for the State Department of Corrections and Community Service. Golub will met with the parole board on Nov. 18 at Green Haven Correctional Facility in upstate Stormville, where he is incarcerated, Foglia said. A decision is expected Nov. 25. If approved, Golub could be released on March 20 of next year.

However, the Tinyes family has launched a campaign to keep Golub from receiving parole. An online petition collected 2,863 before it was closed on Oct. 17. Fogila said that “registered victims” of the crime are permitted to speak at the parole board hearing.

Robert Tinyes, Kelly’s father, called Golub “ a very dangerous criminal” in the statement he wrote for the online petition. “Our family was devastated that day; never to know the life we had before Robert Golub took our Kelly away from us,” Robert wrote.

On March 3, 1989, Kelly, then a student at Woodmere Middle School, was babysitting her younger brother when she received a call at about 3 p.m., Phone records showed that a call was placed from the Golubs’ house to the Tinyeses’ house. She left her Horton Road home and entered the Golub home a few houses down the street. She was found the next day in a basement closest in the Golubs’ home. Her body was wrapped in a sleeping bag. She was beaten, strangled and sexually mutilated.

In 2009, the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office reopened the investigation into the case concerning whether there was an accomplice involved in the murder. Officials said the investigation remains open.
