A variety of tables were set up where children could
learn sign language, create sculptures play dough, make picture frames and have their nails or faces painted.
Of course, what most children really came for were the rides. Five-year-old Mathis Yaeger said she was eager to attack the slide "'cause it's fast!" Mathis also looked forward to a trip on the crazy school bus ride.
Mathis' mom, Meredith Yaeger, said, "I'm having so much fun at the fair. Every year I make sure we go to the Kids' Fest."
Six-year-old Ryan Aversano said he enjoyed riding the whip, and he too anticipated a trip on the crazy bus.
There were a couple of high-flying rides for older fair-goers, but most of the venues were child size. Still, that didn't stop adults who, looking for a chance to feel young again, wedged themselves into the little ones' rides.
The Kids' Fest was complete with the usual carnival fare of hot dogs, corn dogs, sausage and peppers, funnel cakes and ice cream, as well as games of skill and chance.
The Merrick Chamber of Commerce and Commerce Bank co-sponsored the Kids' Fest this year. Chamber President Julie
Marchesella said money raised from the event goes toward three college scholarships, each of which goes to one learning-disabled child at Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools.
