The food was prepared at Clarke High School last Friday night and delivered on Saturday morning. According to Ivan Launer, spokesperson for the Kiwanis Club, the recipients of the baskets are people who are going through financial difficulties and wouldn't have Thanksgiving dinner without the help of the club. "This project provides them with the components of a complete meal at no charge," he said.
The money and food for the baskets was made possible through donations collected by members of the East Meadow Kiwanis Club, students in the Key Clubs of East Meadow and Clarke High Schools, the Builders Clubs of Woodland and Clarke Middle Schools and East Meadow High School's Future Business of America Club, as well as local residents who deposited non-perishable items into bins strategically placed throughout town.
Additionally, financial and product contributions were made by East Meadow businesses, which include Century 21 Realty and the law practice of Nathanson, Devak & Memmoli, as well as A Taste of Home Bakery of North Bellmore.
Leading the endeavor was Kiwanian Alan Hodish, leader of the Community Service Committee, who was helped by the local youth organizations.
The Kiwanis Club of East Meadow is a service organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and families. Its members regularly participate in activities that benefit disadvantaged people in their town and county.
