Long Beach firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue the occupants of a car who were trapped inside the vehicle following a collision in East Atlantic Beach minutes after midnight on Tuesday.
According to the Fire Department’s Facebook page, firefighters rushed to the intersection of Mohawk Avenue and West Beech Street at 12:05 a.m. after a two-car collision.
First arriving units found multiple patients pinned inside one of the vehicles, and immediately called in the department’s extrication team. Atlantic Beach Rescue and the Nassau County Police Department’s Ambulance Bureau also responded to the scene.
Long Beach and county police were on scene assisting with operations and traffic control, according to the Fire Department. Firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics worked to free both trapped occupants, which took about 35 minutes.
Four patients were transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital; two had minor injuries while two others sustained more critical injuries. The cause of the collision is under investigation.
