According to Nassau County Police, the victim was confronted by a group of girls between ages 15-18. Words were exchanged and the group of girls jumped her, First Squad Det. William Woosley said. The victim was allegedly forced against the front of the house and tried to cover her face. The attack, police say, was not random.
The suspects allegedly fled the scene, some on foot and others in a gray Honda.
A 15-year old female was arrested and charged with gang assault on Friday, Feb. 21, police said. A knife was recovered at the scene but police said the suspect was arrested without a weapon. The suspect was taken to a family shelter and Woosley said he believes the crime is gang related.
The victim was slashed across her face, lower back, arms and hands while trying to defend herself against the attackers. While trying to cover her face, the victim crouched down to get away, police said.
They all needed sutures but luckily they all appeared to be superficial, Woosley said. She was treated at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow and was released that evening to her mother.
Only one suspect has been charged in the attack but Woosley said they are looking at some other suspects and it's possible there may be additional arrests, but police are still investigating.
Police are unclear of the motive behind the attack but speculate either an on-going personal problem or that it may be gang related. It may be both, Woosley said.
The people that were at this location, some are gang wannabes. Woosley said. The detective alleged that the location is one where a gangs members from the Crypts, the Bloods and the Folk hang out.
Although police haven't confirmed if the suspect is a gang member, Woosley said, It seems that a lot of the young girls that hang out in this area are friends of gang members. Like I said, they are wannabes.
