After reading Dex: The Heart of a Superhero, the second- grade students at Centre Avenue School in East Rockaway researched different breeds of dogs. They identified many important facts and qualities that make each breed unique.
The students also read and learned about guide dogs. They were very interested in learning about the important role of theses dogs and how they assist their visually impaired handlers. The students wrapped up their unit with an interesting presentation from Joan Lee and companion dog from the Guide Dog Foundation from the Blind Inc.
Lee explained the process of how she was matched with her guide dog, as well as the amazing things that her guide dog can do in order to keep her safe. The students were amazed to learn that the guide dog knows 150 words.
