Most states only have a handful of school districts designated as a Best Community for Music Education – but not New York. The Empire State leads the nation with 117 school districts being recognized last week by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation as among the Best Communities for Music Education — and East Rockaway and Lynbrook are among them.
“Maybe the most impressive aspect of receiving this designation is its timing,” said Lynbrook’s Music Director Joseph Pallotta. “And what I mean by that is, during this most difficult time in education, when so many factions are at odds as to its direction and implementation, the arts can easily become an afterthought — but it’s at this time that the support of the Lynbrook community towards music education and the arts as a whole may be at its strongest.”
Now in its 16th year, BCME recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education
“As Chairperson of Fine and Performing Arts, I believe we have one of the most dedicated music staffs on Long Island,” said Tom Schloen, who is with the East Rockaway School District. “I’m also very proud to announce that all of our music students share and exemplify this dedication. Our students and teachers begin every day at 7:15 a.m., practicing and offering extra help. When the bell rings to end the regular school day, the practicing and tutoring continues well into the afternoon. We do this because we strongly support the study and belief that participation in music education programs helps to close the opportunity gap, improves brain function and sparks language development. Our goal is to afford each of our students the best education we have to offer. “
