Earlier this year, Freeport Village's pollution-spewing, diesel power plant was shut down. Then, the community got behind efforts to restore the Merrick reservoir woodland off the Meadowbrook Parkway. Two major cleanups have taken place there so far this year -- one in April, another in July.
Now, the America the Beautiful campaign, a local organization that formed within the past year, is planning a massive, two-day, multi-site cleanup across south-central Nassau. The group hopes to attract at least 1,000 volunteers for the effort. All cleanups are to take place from 9 a.m. to noon.
