They didn’t face hardship alone

To the Editor:

Sitting at the computer writing this letter, it's hard to believe that a few weeks ago we had no heat, no light, a huge hole in the roof, water dripping into the bedroom and a very large tree covering our small house. Today we have heat and light, the tree is lying wherever such monsters lie after they've been removed, and the roof, with its broken beams and joists, is nearly repaired.

Now that we're getting back to normal, we want to express our appreciation to the mayor, the Board of Trustees and the many, many village employees and volunteers who helped us out during this time. Although it took seven days to have our power hooked up, someone from the village visited us each day just to check on us, offer help and give us an update.

Whether it was an elected official or a village employee wasn't important to us. They were all equally concerned and equally helpful. We even began to look forward to their visits. (We kind of miss them now.) And, when it came time to begin the repairs, it was their cooperation that made the process go as smoothly as it did.

To all of you who worked so hard to help everyone, we want to say, Thank you very, very much. Even old curmudgeons like us, who don't like to admit that we might need help occasionally, appreciated knowing that we weren't facing our situation alone.

Fight the tax hike

To the Editor:

Is there no end to the high real estate tax hike and other ridiculous charges for residents of Rockville Centre? The mayor isn't satisfied with the economic situation. Her answer is to call meetings. She fails to answer to her residents. If she cannot do her job adequately, then she should step down and let someone who is more qualified run the village. If this tax hike goes into effect, will she supply us with shopping carts to hold our belongings, as many of us will be living on the street? The tax hike is just another unfair charge for the citizens of the village. Please stand up and fight this tax hike.

Randi sure fooled me

To the Editor:

I read Randi Kreiss's column from time to time, and I tend to agree with her point of view on most things. I think she's a terrific writer. Now I think she's even more terrific because she really freaked me out with that "Sarah Palin, can you ever, ever forgive me?" April Fools piece last week.

She really had me going! What happened to her? I thought. This can't be! I mean, I was really upset. It was like watching a Beatles fan switch over to the Monkees in the old days.

Randi's "logic" captured those narrow-minded, no-intelligence, nonsensical Tea Party ralliers to a T (or a tea). I'm sure the faction here in Merrick will believe that she's "seen the light," since her phrasing actually matches their way of thinking.
