Don’t pass the blame along

To the Editor:

In response to the letter “Village should help prevent DWIs” (May 31-June 6), the writer should be commended for not driving under the influence of alcohol. However, it seems to me that this is another instance of people not taking responsibility for their actions or lack of action, and passing on the blame.

Rockville Centre police are enforcing the parking policies set by the village in order to keep our residents safe and our neighborhoods clean. Having no-overnight-parking regulations allows officers to keep a record of cars that are illegally parked, whose operators may or may not be involved in negative activities in our area.

If a resident or non-resident feels they are unable to operate their vehicle, it would only take a phone call to the precinct with the information that a car was being left overnight due to an emergency. As a resident, the writer should know that many families have called the Police Department to have the overnight restrictions waived in the event of a house party where revelers were in no condition to drive. These requests are always honored.

If the writer had followed this procedure, he would not blame the Police Department for a ticket.
