The largest water supplier in Nassau County — Long Island American Water — is building an iron removal filtration plant on the Malverne/Lynbrook border to help better serve its near 250,000 customers, officials said.
Bill Varley, president of Long Island American Water, said there was an existing pump station at the location of the new filtration plant, located on the corner of Franklin and Hempstead Avenues. There are two water wells there that aren't being utilized, he said, because the water in them contained high levels of iron. In order to use them, Varley said, they needed to build an iron removal filtration plant, which allows his company to bring the two wells into their water system.
"By bringing in these wells, it will bring four million gallons per day back into the system," Varley said. "That's key for the summer months when the demand is high."
According to Richard Kern, director of operations and engineering for the water company, construction began in October and the plant is slated to be complete by August 2010. Varley said the reason for the upgrade was to utilize local water wells and better serve its customer base.
"Our committment is to provide the highest quality of water," Varley said. "Our standard meets or exceeds state guidelines. Serving our customers are our first interest."
