L.I. Nets win streak snapped

The Long Island Nets (16-9), the NBA G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, were defeated by the Grand Rapids Gold (14-10) 89-96 on March 9 at Nassau Coliseum.

Long Island’s effort was led by guard Bryce Brown, who recorded 19 points, three rebounds and one assist in 30 minutes. Nets forward Craig Randall II tallied 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes. Long Island center Thon Maker added a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds in 24 minutes. Additionally, while on assignment with Long Island, Brooklyn center Day’Ron Sharpe notched 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while shooting 6-of-14 from the field and 3-of-5 from distance in 30 minutes.

The matinee got off to a quick start with both teams playing a close game. Grand Rapids closed the opening period ahead by three, 21-24. Long Island battled hard in the second to close the gap, but its efforts proved unsuccessful. The Gold went into the break ahead by four, 44-40.

Long Island worked diligently to turn the tides in the third quarter, outrebounding the Gold by five, 16-11. Although the Nets led defensively, Grand Rapids outscored the Nets 25-17 in third and maintained its lead into the fourth quarter ahead by 12, 69-57.  Long Island entered the final quarter of play determined to make an impact, but Grand Rapids stifled the effort.

Grand Rapids guard Trevon Duval led the way for the Gold with 21 points, five rebounds and nine assists in 40 minutes. Gold forward Manny Camper added 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists in 45 minutes. Grand Rapids forward Petr Cornelie recorded 19 points and 17 rebounds in 41 minutes.
