L.I. Nets work overtime to defeat Westchester Knicks

The Long Island Nets (13-11), the NBA G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, defeated the Westchester Knicks (7-18), 126-121, in overtime on Wednesday evening at Nassau Coliseum. The victory marks Long Island’s first home overtime win since the 2021-22 regular season.

Seven Nets scored in double figures, including guard Davion Warren, who notched a career-high 26 points to go along with five rebounds, one assist and three steals in 24 minutes. Forward Kaiser Gates posted 18 points, two rebounds and one assist in 31 minutes. Brooklyn two-way guard Jacob Gilyard notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 assists in addition to two steals in 33 minutes. Guard Kennedy Chandler recorded 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and one block in 17 minutes. Brooklyn two-way guard/forward Jaylen Martin tallied 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and one block in 19 minutes. Center David Muoka and guard Nate Pierre-Louis posted 10 points each in 25 and 21 minutes, respectively. 

The two teams went back-and-forth to start the first quarter, tying the match five times. Despite Long Island shooting 50.0 percent from the field and from behind the arc, the Knicks closed the quarter ahead by two, 35-33. Westchester put its foot on the gas in the second quarter, outscoring Long Island 40-26 in the period. Although the Nets’ offense battled hard, shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from deep, it was not enough to take the lead overall. Long Island closed the first half down by 14, 40-26. 

Long Island worked hard in the third quarter, as they outscored the Knicks 25-24 and outrebounded them 17-8. Westchester held its lead and closed the period ahead by 15, 99-84. Long Island continued to shrink the gap in the fourth quarter, coming within three points of the Knicks in the last four minutes of the game. Brooklyn two-way guard Jacob Gilyard sinked a big 3-point shot in the last 35 seconds of regulation to tie the match 118-118. The Nets outscored the Knicks 8-3 and went on to defeat Westchester in overtime, 126-121. 

New York two-way guard Duane Washington Jr. tallied 18 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in 38 minutes. Westchester forward DaQuan Jeffries, Knicks two-way forward Charlie Brown Jr. and Knicks center Dmytro Skapintsev recorded 17 points each.
