The 2005-06 budget represents a 7.6 percent increase in spending over this year. The library budget vote originally took place May 17, and was defeated by three votes.
Margaret Cincotta, the North Merrick library director, said confusion and misinformation about the library budget vote contributed to the narrow margin in both votes. ³The public is uninformed as to what they were voting for, and the misinformation didn¹t originate at the library,² said Cincotta. ³The library is the information center of the community, and patrons who are interested in finding out about the library should attend the board meetings or call me with any questions they might have. Our next meeting is July 19 at 7:30, and the public is invited, as always.²
Had the budget been defeated, library hours would have been cut, along with certain children's and adult programs.
