Mr. Hodgson, whose last day on the job is Thursday, Dec. 28, began his career in library services during the mid-1960s as a librarian in Manhattan. During the 1970s, he took a position as assistant director of the Oceanside Public Library, and in 1985, he was appointed director of the Merrick Library.
An Oceanside for 25 years, Mr. Hodgson said retirement will give him and his wife, Claire, the opportunity to travel and spend more time with friends and family, including their daughters, Nell and Rebecca, and 8-year-old granddaughter Candra.
Walter Mintz, president of the Merrick Library Board, said Mr. Hodgson has played a key role in the community during his tenure. " His professionalism and leadership have been instrumental in creating [the library's] outstanding reputation," said Mr. Mintz. "I wish to thank him for his distinguished service to the library and to the people of Merrick."
Of his time in Merrick, Mr. Hodgson said: "It has been an honor to serve the Merrick community. I couldn't ask for a community that supports its library better."
He added by Ms. Minkoff has much to bring to the director's post. "I have worked with Sonya for the 15 years," said Mr. Hodgson. "You couldn't ask for a more professional and competent person to take over the position of running the library. She is a real asset to the community."
Mr. Mintz said that she "possesses those qualities of vision, leadership and professional expertise that are essential in keeping the Merrick Library responsive to the needs of the community."
A Merrick Library employee for 22 years, Ms. Minkoff has served as assistant director since 1990. Before Merrick, Ms. Minkoff worked for the Queens Public Library. She received her undergraduate degree in English literature from Queens College and her master's degree in library science from St. John's University in Queens.
Ms. Minkoff, who has called Merrick home for 26 years, said the library is more than just a place of employment. "There is a family atmosphere here," said Ms. Minkoff. "I have a great staff that I have been extremely close to over the years. I will do my best to provide the community, who are my friends and neighbors, with the best possible service."
Ms. Minkoff and her husband, Marty, have two daughters, Cheryl and Joy.
