Cole Porter JAZZ! on a Thursday Afternoon with The Paul Joseph Quartet The music of the great Cole Porter will be featured as the Library proudly presents Cole Porter JAZZ! with The Paul Joseph Quartet Thursday, December 18 at 12:30 pm. Join us for an afternoon of brilliant American music played by Paul Joseph on piano, guitarist Frank Barbera, bassist Arthur Sommerville, and drummer Mike Corn. Admission is free.
Calvin Earl and the African American Spiritual on Sunday, December 21 at 2 p.m.Calvin Earl has been working as a musician since the age of nine. His journey through music has taken him to make some interesting discoveries. He grew to love the African American Spiritual. These passions lead him to get a bill through Congress naming the Spiritual a National Treasure. Come to hear his music and stories with the whole family at the East Meadow Public Library. Reservations open on Monday, December 8. Admission is free.
New Year Cabaret with Tommy Morimoto on Sunday, December 28 at 2 p.m. Tommy Morimoto is a Brubeck Institute Fellow and a consummate musician. He has won numerous other awards for his musicianship including the 2002 Down Beat Student Award for Outstanding Jazz Instrumental Soloist. He plays a brilliant tenor saxophone as well as being a dynamic cabaret singer. Come to the East Meadow Public Library Cabaret and celebrate the New Year a little early with us. Admission is free.
A call for artists and shoppers December is holiday time and the month for the East Meadow Public Library's Annual Miniature Art Show and Sale. This popular event will be in the Browsing Room Showcases for the entire month. Here you can find the one of a kind presents you have been seeking at extremely reasonable prices. You can choose from paintings, sculpture, or jewelry. Give a gift of art; it's a gift from the heart.
Long Island Writers' Guild invites anyone wishing to write to attend. The Guild meets on the last Tuesday of every month. The next meeting is on December 30 at 12:30 p.m. at the East Meadow Public Library. Admission is free.
Toby Walker is a unique, accomplished finger style guitar virtuoso. He is a master of blues, rags, hot country picking, and coaxes more out of a guitar than anyone can imagine, but the originality doesn't end there. Toby is also a skilled singer and songwriter who draws inspiration from traditional and contemporary music. He takes that musical foundation and creates something uniquely his own. Now see him at the East Meadow Public Library on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. Reservations are essential as Toby always plays to a packed house. Reserve your seat beginning Monday, Jan. 5. First day of registration for East Meadow School District residents. Admission is free.
Free income tax help Tax time is coming up. The library has two experts coming in with tax tips and ways to save which will help you prepare your own tax returns. In addition, we will again be offering free tax preparation by AARP volunteers. Free Tax Preparation: Help is given on a first come first served basis. Please bring last year's tax return and any new forms you received through the mail. The Library has a selection of forms. AARP will have tax consultants at the Library to help you prepare your tax returns Monday, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 12 to 4 p.m. beginning Feb. 2 through April 14. IRS trained students from Hofstra will be at the library Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. from February 7 through April 11. (The following programs will provide you with information to help you prepare your tax return, but the speakers will not prepare your taxes at the Library.) Mark Silverstein of H & R Block will be here with tax preparation advice on Friday, January 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, February 4 at 12:30 p.m. Jack Lisack, formerly of the IRS, will give you the latest information for doing this year's taxes on Tuesday, January 20, 12:30 p.m.

Knights of Pythias The Knights of Pythias Alliance-East Meadow Lodge 774 is seeking new members to join its ranks. This non-sectarian organization serves the community through a number of altruistic endeavors, including food baskets for the needy, donations to charitable organizations, anti-drug programs, and a host of other activities. Sons of Italy The East Meadow local lodge, Edward J. Speno Lodge No. 2568, are calling on Italians and Italian Americans to join the largest men and women organization in America, the Order of Sons of Italy in America. This co-ed local lodge meets on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish school of culture center, 574 East Meadow Ave. in East Meadow. Blood drive Yours Ours Mine Community Center and the New York Blood Center will be hosting a blood drive on Dec. 20 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The center is located on 152 Center Lane, Levittown.

Knights of Columbus annual free throw contest sponsored by the Pope Pius XII Council on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 4 p.m. in the St. Raphael's Auditorium. The contest is open to all boys and girls, ages 10 through 14. There is free admission to participants and spectators. All participants get a certificate. Alzheimer's support The Bristal Assisted Living, 40 Merrick Ave., hosts an Alzheimer's disease support group for caregivers every second Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Call Pat Kiley at (516) 918-4009 to register.
Helping relatives of addicts Relatives and friends who are suffering as a result of a loved one's battle with addition can now receive support via a hotline run by the Long Island Crisis Center, at (516) 481-4000.
Substance help Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore. All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Support for moms. The Sunrise Mothers' Center, a member-run, non-sectarian, non-profit organization in Bellmore, is dedicated to supporting the needs and experiences of mothers. The center provides discussion groups with child care on premises, active committee work, book groups, social activities for parents and children, and speakers on various topics.For more information, call (516) 781-8946, or visit the group's Web site at sunrisemothers.com.
Crisis counseling. The Long Island Crisis Center offers 24-hour/seven-day-a-week crisis intervention counseling. Anyone who is depressed, needs help in controlling teenagers or wants to beat an addiction is encouraged to call (516) 679-1111. Calls are free and anonymous.
Overeaters Anonymous is held on Tuesdays from 7:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Salisbury Park on Salisbury Park Drive in East Meadow. Overeaters Anonymous offers mutual support and fellowship for those recovering from compulsive overeating. Everyone is welcome! For more information, call (516) 997-4534.
Help for smokers. The Nassau County Department of Health, in collaboration with the New York State Smokers' Quitline, is sponsoring a program which offers four weeks of nicotine replacement therapy for smokers who want to quit. The therapy also known as "the patch" is available to medically-eligible county residents at no cost. Residents should call the New York Smokers' Quitline at 1-866-697-8487.
