With the New York Mets opening the 2026 season against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, the Long Island Rail Road is reminding fans that public transit is the fastest way to reach Citi Field.
“Mr. and Mrs. Met would agree, the LIRR provides fast, safe and affordable service to every single game at Citi Field,” said Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free. “So avoid the traffic and let us make sure you’re in your seats for the first pitch.”
Fewer parking spots at Citi Field this season have made train travel even more appealing. The LIRR and the Mets are offering a new “Take the Train to the Game” promotion, giving attendees $5 off certain LIRR tickets, including day passes and CityTickets to Mets-Willets Point purchased through the TrainTime app.
Weekday fares from Manhattan normally cost $14.50, but the promotion drops them to $9.50. Weekend fares are reduced from $10.50 to $5.50. Long Island riders from Mineola and Hicksville also see discounts on both weekday and weekend fares.
Fans add the “Take the Train to the Game” promotion when buying their Mets tickets, then receive a link on game day to purchase their discounted LIRR pass through the TrainTime app.
“This promotion is an example of the MTA working with private entities to earn revenue while improving the customer experience,” said MTA Director of Commercial Ventures Mary John. “Public transit is already the best way to get to Mets games, and this benefit makes it easier than ever for our customers.”
