LIRR schedule changes begin May 11

New schedules add weekday Montauk options and restore some service

The Long Island Rail Road will roll out a new set of schedules beginning May 11, with additional summer service on several branches set to start a week later, transit officials announced.

The changes include adjustments to midday weekday trains, largely to accommodate ongoing track maintenance and station accessibility upgrades. Officials said some trains may depart earlier than usual, but there will be no changes to rush-hour service.

“As we head into the busy summer season, we’re expanding service to give customers more flexibility, including additional weekday options to Montauk and more direct trips to Penn Station,” LIRR President Rob Free said. “These schedule adjustments also allow us to continue critical maintenance and accessibility work so we can deliver safe, reliable service.”

Expanded summer service on the Long Beach, Montauk and Ronkonkoma branches will begin May 18.

On the Montauk Branch, a 5:13 p.m. train from Penn Station to Speonk — which typically extends to Montauk only on summer Thursdays and Fridays — will run through to Montauk Monday through Friday for the duration of the summer season. The change is intended to give East End riders more weekday travel options and help spread ridership more evenly.

For westbound service, two existing Sunday trains departing Montauk at 11:37 a.m. and 4:18 p.m. will run directly to Penn Station, providing additional one-seat rides. Those trains will operate on Sundays throughout the summer, except on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, when they will run on Mondays.

Additional changes will affect riders on several other branches.

On the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson lines, a new weekday train will depart Farmingdale at 4:32 a.m., making stops at Bethpage, Hicksville, Westbury, Mineola, New Hyde Park and Jamaica before arriving at Penn Station at 5:26 a.m. Meanwhile, the 4:12 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma will depart two minutes later and will no longer stop at Farmingdale, Bethpage, Hicksville or Mineola.

Service improvements are also coming to Westbury, where midday weekday trains will return to a 30-minute frequency following the completion of track work.

On the Greenport line, midday weekday service east of Ronkonkoma will resume May 11.
