Local ophthamologist lectures on glaucoma at Yale Medical School

Long time Rockville Centre resident Stanley J. Berke, MD, FACS, a renowned ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery, was invited to give Grand Rounds as a visiting professor at Yale Medical School on Sept 5 and 6.

Berke gave three separate lectures to ophthalmologists and ophthalmology residents-in-training at the school over a two-day period. The first presentation was about his preferred method for performing laser treatments for glaucoma based on his original research. The second was about a new drug, delivered as an eye drop, to treat glaucoma. The third presentation was about a newly discovered effect of the most frequently prescribed eye drop for the treatment of glaucoma.

Berke is credited with bringing this to the attention of doctors worldwide, and for working with the Food and Drug Administration to get this side effect added to the package insert for the medication. The research on this subject was done in collaboration with other glaucoma specialists at Harvard Medical School.

Berke founded Berke Eye Care, in Westbury, in March 2012. Prior to that, he practiced in Lynbrook for 25 years. He is also an associate clinical professor of ophthalmology at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, and has volunteered his time teaching ophthalmology residents-in-training since 1986. He completed his fellowship at Harvard Medical School in glaucoma and cataract surgery in 1986.

Berke has published numerous articles in medical journals and has written several chapters in ophthalmology textbooks. He has lectured extensively on many topics involving glaucoma and cataract surgery.
