Local students create signs for the times

On the lawn of the LIPA/Keyspan office building at 45 Mill Road in Hewlett Tuesday, April 3, the ribbon was cut from an anti-drunk driving sign created from a poster designed by Oceanside High School junior Danielle Block. The sign reads The key to your future is in your hands, and will be on display there for several months.
Her idea was chosen from approximately 40 other anti-drunk-driving posters submitted to a contest sponsored by Legislator Jeff Toback (D-Oceanside), who solicited cooperation from LIPA, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Parents Against Irresponsible Driving (PAID).
High school students from Oceanside, Hewlett and Rambam Mesivta in Lawrence, with advisement from the SADD representative in each of their schools, were asked to submit posters to the first annual anti-drunk driving poster contest of the seventh legislative district.
Richard Kessel, chairman of LIPA, Judy Jacobs, presiding legislative officer and Joanne McGarry, executive director of Nassau County traffic safety considered the posters and decided that Block's poster should be made into a sign by professional sign-makers hired by LIPA and displayed on the property it co-owns with Keyspan Energy.
In addition to having her sign prominently displayed along a high-traffic thoroughfare, Block was awarded a $250 savings bond care of Leg. Toback. The second-place and third-place runners-up, whose posters were not made into signs, also received savings bonds. Jesse Lasky of Oceanside received a $100 savings bond, and Josh Mirman of Rockville Centre received a $75 savings bond.
All the posters entered in the contest are now on display at the Nassau County legislative offices in Mineola.
