Locust Valley Central School District Board of Education meeting cancelled due to gun threats

The Locust Valley Central School District's regular Sept. 10 Board of Education meeting was cancelled due to threats of gun violence. The threats, delivered via two voicemails on the district's main switchboard line, "made specific political statement and referenced the tragic killing of Charlie Kirk in Utah," according to a statement released by Board President George Vasiliou.

Charlie Kirk, a far-right influencer and founder of the conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA, was murdered on Sept. 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

Upon receiving the threats, the board cancelled the meeting and evacuated the Locust Valley High School/Middle School, where the meeting was to have taken place, following the district's safety protocol.

The district contacted the Nassau County Police Department and Department of Homeland Security, who, working in collaboration with the Suffolk County Police Department, identified the caller and established that there was no immediate threat to the district.

Classes resumed as normal on Thursday, with additional security personnel and additional support from unmarked Homeland Security vehicles. The district paused all outdoor and athletic activities for Thursday "out of an abundance of caution" according to Vasiliou's statement. Regular athletics practices resumed on Friday.

"We are grateful for your patience and trust as we responded swiftly and responsibly to ensure everyone's well being," Vasiliou's statement ended. "We remain grateful to our law enforcement partners for their swift response and attention to this matter."

This is a developing story, more information to follow.
