Special Events

Family fair

Cruzada Evangelica Misionera Church, at 265 Long Beach Blvd., will host a family fair at Kennedy Plaza at City Hall from 12 to 7 p.m. on June 19. There will be food, health screenings, insurance information, jewelry, baskets. For information call 698-6915. 

Blood drive

St. Mary of the Isle Parish, at East Park Avenue and Monroe Boulevard, is sponsoring a blood drive on June 20. The Bloodmobile will be parked in front of the church between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.  For information call Blanca Cales at 432-0157 ext. 17. 

Bikes and surfboards blessed  

St. James Episcopal Church in Long Beach will hold the 2nd Annual "Blessing of the Bikes and Boards" on the boardwalk at Magnolia Boulevard at 11 p.m. on June 12. Father Christopher King will be presiding over the 20 minute blessing. Everyone with bicycles and surfboards are invited to attend. 

Flag Day ceremony

The Long Beach Joint Veterans organization will hold a Flag Day ceremony at Veterans Park on the bay at 1:30 p.m. on June 14. Old Glory will be honored and retired flags will be disposed of properly in a burning ceremony. New memorial bricks, inscribed with veterans’ names, will be placed in the Veterans Walk of Honor. To honor a veteran with an engraved brick, contact John Radin at 431-5192.

Jewish graduation ceremony

The BACH Jewish Center, at 210 Edwards Boulevards, will hold a Jewish Discovery Graduation Ceremony at 11 a.m. on June 26. For information about the Hebrew school visit www.BachYouth.com or call 516-897-2473.

Boardwalk dinner

Candlelit Shabbat Dinner on the waterJoin the BACH Jewish Center, at 210 Edwards Boulevard, at their 3rd Annual Shabbat boardwalk dinner and enjoy an elegant dinner meal under the stars and to the sound of the ocean’s waves starting at 7 p.m. at Franklin Boulevard beach on June 26. 

VFW anniversary party

The Long Beach Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 1384 will celebrate their 75th anniversary on June 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Long Beach VFW Hall on West Park Avenue. Please join them for a fun evening of food, open bar and music by Sal Vivo and Friends performing the best of classic rock-n-roll. Artists wanted for fine arts show

The City of Long Beach is preparing for its 16th annual Fine Arts Show, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday June 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kennedy Plaza. The art committee invites artists to present and sell their work, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, drawings, prints, sculpture and photography. Crafts and jewelry will not be accepted. A single space (10x15) costs $150 for the two-day event. For information call 431-1000.

Historical bus tours

Long Beach Historical Society will host its Heritage Month House Toure on June 13. The tours start at Long Beach Bus Depot on Park Avenue at 9, 9:45, 10:30, 11:15 a.m., and 12 and 12:45 p.m. The cost is $30 for members, $30 everyone else. The  two hour docent-guided bus tour includes the interiors of five never-before-on-tour homes plus several museum neighborhood homes at 432-1192. 

Ovarian cancer walk-fundraiser

The Circle of Strength — a support group for cancer patients, caregivers and supporters — is holding a walk to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and help raise funds for research to help early detection, better treatments and a cure at Baldwin Park starting at 11 a.m. on June 6. Martin Sperling Golf Classic

Atlantic City trip

Harmonica session 

Enjoy the folksy, toe-tapping, light-hearted entertainment of the Long Island Harmonica Club. Hear music that ranges from contemporary to country, Americana to ethnic, from the 20’s to the 90’s at 1 p.m. on June 12.

The Stick-Tet returns

Steve Adelson brings a trio versionof his Stick-Tet to the Kennedy Plaza stage. Adelson will perform on his new half-fretless Chapman Stick playing his uniqueinterpretations and explorations of Latin, pop and jazz tunes at 3 p.m. on June 12.

New York Clarinet Trio in concert

Hear a blend of jazz, classical and ragtime music at 1 p.m. on June 13.  Valerie Jones, Nancy Daniels and Heather Jackson have performed for over two decades in bands and orchestras and have gained popularity for its wide range of repertoire and high standards of musical performance.

Roywilliam & Dean perform

Roywilliam and Dean began performing together in high school. This song writing acoustic duo will perform original folk music with a “country” edge. Sunday, June 13 at 3 p.m.

American Art at The Met

The Met’s American Wing have recently reopened to rave reviews. The galleries for American paintings will reopen in 2011.Mary Vahey, assistant professor of art history at Hofstra, will walk you through the highlights of the American collection in anticipation of the reopening at 2 p.m. on June 14. The collection includes masterworks by such artists as Copley Stuart, Bingham, Homer, Eakins, Sargent, Cassatt, and Whistler.

Yoga for the neck

Learn easy yoga postures for a healthy neck with instructor Kathleen Regan. These exercises will reduce stress, neck pain and tension. They will strengthen the muscles that support your neck and head and improve posture at 2 p.m. on June 15. Bring a yoga mat and a blanket.

Open jazz jam

Jazz musicians will entertain at the senior center on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Send inquiries, or requests to be placed on the band’s email list to nick@nickara.com.

Exercise classes

The Rec is offering two adult courses this spring, a yoga/pilates class and a boot camp will be held in the Teen Center (above the Ice Arena) on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Registration is at the Rec’s swimming pool, at Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive. The fee is $50 for Long Beach residents; $100 for non-residents.

Men’s soccer tournament

A Men’s 8 v 8 Soccer league starts June 27, and the Long Beach Recreation department is holding this small-side soccer competition for players 18 and over. Team applications will be accepted through June 15. The fee is $600 per team. For information, call the Rec at 431-5533.  

Youth beach volleyball

A co-ed beach volleyball program is offered to Long Beach youth ages 10 to 17 during the summer months. The program is held at 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday on the beach volleyball courts at Riverside Boulevard. 10- to 12-year-olds will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and 13 to 17-year-olds will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Sean Ryan Memorial Fun Run 

The Rec will hold the 6th Annual Sean Ryan Memorial 5K & 1K Children’s Fun Run on June 26 at 8:00 a.m.  This race is in memory of Sean Ryan, an irreplaceable member of the Long Beach Community and the Long Beach Police Department. The early registration fee is $20 before June 25 at 5:00 p.m. Day of race registration will be from 7 to 8 a.m. at Riverside at the boardwalk; the cost will be $25.
