Events & Notices

Ticket booth service cuts and ltd. LIRR service — The Long Beach Railroad station has cut ticketbooth hours from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Commuters are urged to use MTA.com to buy tickets on line or at the easy-to-use machines at the station. Tickets bought on board the train are available at an additional cost to riders.

Also, The LIRR said that due to a major signal modernization, very limited service will take place over the weekends of Nov. 6 and 7 for all branches of the railroad. There will be no train or bus service to Brooklyn. The LIRR suggests that customers travel by railroad for essential business only on those two weekends.

The Long Beach Recreation Department — will hold the 7th Annual City Council Turkey Trot on Sunday, Nov. 21, on Riverside Blvd. and the Boardwalk. There will be two races: a one mile for elementary through high school children and a 10K (6.2 mile) race. The one-mile race will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 10K race will start at 9:00 a.m. Awards will be presented to the first three male and female finishers in the one-mile race and the top three male and female finishers in the 10K in each age category along with the first male and female finisher in the 10K turkey trot. The entrance fee for the one-mile run is $5.00 per student. The 10K run is $20.00 for pre-registrants and $25.00 on the day of the race. All pre-registrants will receive a long sleeve t-shirt. Kristallnacht Program — a ceremony commemorating the beginning of the Holocaust on Sunday, Oct. 31 at Long Beach City Hall, 1 West Chester St., at 1 p.m. The ceremnony will feature local and state officials and other guest speakers. A candelighting ceremony will be led by Dora Heller. El Molei Rachamin with Rabbi Eli Goodman of the Bach Jewish Center. Long Beach High School student Russell Goetz will lead The National Anthem and Hatikvah. Ceremony is sponsored by The Holocaust Memorial Committee of Long Island. Art in the Plaza — Art in the Plaza will take place at Kennedy Plaza in Long Beach Art in the Plaza will take place at Kennedy Plaza in Long Beach (almost) every Sunday from May 16 through Nov. 14, 2010. Visit the plaza to view, purchase or just appreciate all types of mediums. Oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, mixed media, photography, sculpture and more will be displayed. Each week different artists will exhibit their works giving residents and visitors the opportunity to experience visual arts from our talented local art leagues. Long Beach Middle School — to welcome nearly 30 veterans from six wars to speak to students about their experiences. Veterans from WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will be honored. One of the WWII veterans who was on the first wave of troops that stormed the beaches of Normandy will also be honored.

The Lions Club of Long Beach — in conjunction with Laurel Cleaners is sponsoring their annual coat drive. Please help us to keep those less fortunate than us to stay warm this winter. Collection dates are October 23, 2010 through March 19, 2011. Drop--off location is Laurel Cleaners, 285 West Park Avenue. Lion Allen Schwartz, owner of the Laurel, cleans the coats at no charge and they are distributed to St. Mary’s, St. Ignatius, The INN, Martin Luther King Center and Sacred Heart church. Last year, over 1000 coats were collected and we hope to top that this year.

Thanksgiving Food Drive — St. Mary of the Isle Parish is currently preparing for its annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive. With over 500 families to provide for during this upcoming holiday, the following items are desperately needed: canned goods, vegetables, fruits, juices, soups, dry mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, turkey gravy, parmalat milk, instant non-fat dry milk and other non-perishable items. The Long Beach Christmas Angel, Inc. — Holiday dinner event will take place on Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bridgeview Yacht Club in Island Park. Dinner tickets are $125 in advance and $150 at the door. We will be selling a limited number of $100 raffle tickets for a chance to win a $10,000 prize. Ghost Busters — The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will host their second guided Ghost Tour of Long Beach along with a Great Pumpkin Blaze on Saturday, Oct. 30. Take a guided tour of the scariest parts of Long Beach from 6:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.. Tickets are $10 for LBILA members, $15 for non members. Children under 5 are free. Following the ghostly tour, visit the “haunted mansion” for some more spooky fun, refreshments and get ready for the blaze to begin. Enter your carved pumpkin for $5 per family. Fun happens at the “haunted mansion” at 151 W. Penn Street.

Long Beach AARP Chapter 5348 — meeting on Friday, Nov. 5. Will feature a talk on Social Networking: Twitter & Facebook, by Scott Evers of Long Beach's West End Art Assoc. In Sickness and In Health: A Memoir of Love —

Saturday, October 23, at 2:00 p.m. Joseph Satriano akaJ.S. Russo will discuss how he used journaling to document life with his wife, Susan, and how these records are transformed into an inspirational book, In Sickness and in Health: A Memoir of Love. Step Strong and Balance

Mondays, Nov. 22 and 29 at 12:30 p.m., there will be a gentle indoor workout for novice exercisers. Jan Steinberger’s program includes work on balance, creative movement and stretching to music. Seniors can improve their balance and get stronger at the Magnolia Senior Center located at 650 Magnolia Blvd. in Long Beach. Hand Painted Glassware — Make holiday gifts for family and friends! Seated Tai Chi — Instructor Judith Weitz invites Long Beach seniors (55+) to join her program where students will tone and stretch all their muscles without putting stress on the knees, feet, thighs or back.
