Handel"s MESSIAH concert — The St. Ignatius Choral Society continues its tradition of a holiday presentation of selections from Handel"s beloved oratorio MESSIAH, with soloists, chorus and orchestra conducted by Dr. Denis F. Nicholson, at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12.

This is an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy one of the masterworks of choral music as a prelude to the season. Landon Jeffers will be the bass soloist. St. Ignatius Church is located at the corner of West Penn St. and Grand Boulevard, at the western end of the Long Beach boardwalk. A donation of $7.00 at the door is suggested. Tickets may also be obtained from chorus members or at the church office.

Long Beach Lions — The Lions will host their 27th annual picnic, a Long Beach/Florida get-together, on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Birch State Park, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Pavilions number 1 and 2. The entrance fee is $10.00. Guests must bring their own food and charcoal to barbecue. Toys for Tots Drive — St. Mary of the Isle Parish and St. Ignatius Martyr Church are sponsoring their first annual Toys for Tots Drive and are in need of help. Toys may be dropped off at St. Mary’s rectory at 315 E. Walnut Street in Long Beach, or St. Ignatius Rectory at 721 W. Broadway through Dec. 16. Pick up of toys can be arranged by calling Blanca Cales, Outreach Director of St. Mary’s and St. Ignatius at 516-432-0157, Ext. 17, or Gloria Febrizio at 516-404-7161.

Democratic Club ­— The next meeting will take place Tuesday, Dec.14 at 7:00 p.m. at 305 W. Park Avenue. The guest speaker, Eric Alexander of Vision Long Island, will provide an update on downtown revitalization efforts across Long Island, state and federal infrastructure investments that support redevelopment, and the implementation of the recently passed New York State Smart Growth Infrastructure Act. A discussion will be held on strategies both residents and business owners can employ to strengthen their downtowns.

A Taste of Long Beach — Friends of the Long Beach Library are invited on Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Lola’s, 180 West Park Avenue. This year, a series of tastings at several local restaurants will take place. The series will begin with the sampling of Chef David Livingston's (of Lola"s) signature hors d'oeuvres. Fourth Annual Mustaches For Kids Stache Bash — The event, at the Inn in Long Beach on Saturday, Dec. 11 from 6 p.m. -10 p.m., will feature raffles, prizes, t-shirts, and sweatshirt sales, as well as food and a mustache competition. The chapter of Mustaches For Kids has already raised close to $30,000 for the Pediatric Free Care Fund at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. For more info, please go to www.m4kli.com.

Saint Mary's Church — A new Christmas schedule has been announced for Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Parish. On Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m., and on Dec. 24, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, a special penance service and confessions will take place. Christmas masses on Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, will be held at 4:00 p.m. (Hall), 5:30 p.m. (Church), 7:30 p.m. (Misa de gallo – Spanish, Hall) and the midnight Christmas Mass, with carols, will begin at 11:30 p.m. (Hall). Long Beach Historical & Preservation Society — The All Aboard event will take place at The Long Beach Museum Express on Sat. & Sun., Dec. 11 and 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come see Engineer Les and his model trains, and have a fun filled day of learning how the rail road helped develop Long Beach. There will be refreshments and prizes. One lucky winner will take home their own model train set. Admission $5 per family. Museum is located at 226 West Penn St. For more info, call 432-1192.

Rare Total Lunar Eclipse — Dec. 21 Plus More. Tuesday, December 7, at 2:30 p.m. Larry Gerstman will talk about the last winter solstice total lunar eclipse until 2094. Future total eclipses both lunar and solar visible here will be covered. He will also discuss the last shuttle mission, seeing “What’s in the Sky.”

The Music of Mario Lanza — Wednesday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. 51 years after his death in 1959, Mario Lanza continues to be a much-beloved artist, even influencing the Three Tenors. Lanza’s song “Be My Love” was number one on the pop charts. Cantor Don Goldberg will discuss Lanza’s musical career and play some very rare recordings.

Crochet Blankets for Wounded Soldiers

— Join us in a charitable crocheting event to make red, white and blue lap blankets (36”X42”) for the wounded soldiers who will be visiting this summer during the Long Beach Waterfront Warriors event. Experienced beginner crocheters will also learn how to make granny squares with Robin Lisa in her workshops on Tuesdays, December 14, 21 and 27 at 9:30 a.m. Classes will be offered at the Magnolia Senior Center located at 650 Magnolia Blvd. in Long Beach. West End Arts Guild — Monthly meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. from December through June at 650 Magnolia Blvd. (upstairs). Meetings are open to the public.

West End Arts Guild — On Monday, Dec. 13 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Long Beach Community Center on Magnolia Blvd., the Guild will hold its annual Holiday fundraiser event. There will be holiday festivities, food and beverages, and a new WEA members’ exhibition to view at the Center. Those who attend may make a small donation to possibly win one of many available gifts.
