Simone Marie Freeman, a former deputy town attorney for the town of North Hempstead, has been hired as Long Beach's first permanent Corporation Counsel since October of 2019.
Freeman succeeds Corporation Counsel Rob Agostisi, who was also Acting City Manager. Agostisi resigned last fall and is now chief legal counsel for the LGBT Network. Former Assistant Corporation Counsel Gregory Kalnitsky temporarily took over before departing to become the City Attorney for Glen Cove.
In the last seven years, Freeman was working at the Amato Law Group in Garden City, which specialized in zoning, project development, governmental and municipal compliance and litigation. Additionally, she was deputy town attorney for the Town of North Hempstead from 2009 to 2013.
Freeman began practicing law in 2008 and earned her law degree from Hofstra University’s Maurice A. Deane School of Law.
In a statement, City officials said they conducted a long search before selecting Freeman.
“Ms. Freeman was hired by the City of Long Beach after an extensive, months-long, search,” the statement said. “As part of the process, City officials reviewed 28 resumes and interviewed 11 candidates.”
