A Long Beach man was arrested on Monday by New York State Police and charged with promoting child pornography.
Ross Tanner, 34, was nabbed by police at his West Broadway apartment and charged with two counts of promoting a sexual performance of a child, a D felony.
Members of the New York State Police Computer Crimes Unit, the New York State Police Valley Stream Bureau of Criminal Investigations, the Long Beach Police Department and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office executed a search warrant of Tanner’s apartment after he was suspected of disseminating child pornography, police said.
In a statement, police said that members of the Computer Crimes Unit had found evidence that Tanner, who works as a substitute teacher at P.S. 16 in Queens, used his computer to disseminate child pornography over the Internet. Police said that they did not find evidence to suggest that any children were in immediate danger as a result of Tanner’s alleged activity, or that his activity went beyond the images in question. A State Police spokesman and District Attorney Kathleen Rice did not return calls for comment.
Police seized Tanner’s computer and said that the Computer Crimes unit is currently conducting a forensic investigation. Tanner could face additional charges pending the results of the examination, police said.
Tanner was taken into custody and was also charged with one count of unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.
Tanner was being held at the Nassau County Detention Center, and was arraigned on $5,000 bond or $2,500 cash for two counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child at First District Court in Hempstead. He is due back in court on Dec. 16.
