Long Beach police said a man was shot in the face early Monday morning during an altercation on East Market Street.

Detective Lt. James Canner said that the incident happened on May 30 at around 12:30 a.m., when a group of men were involved in an altercation. Canner said that a suspect pulled out a gun during the incident, and shot another man during the fracas.

“There was some sort of disturbance prior to the shooting — apparently some type of disturbance in the street and then there was a fight,” Canner said, adding that such shooting incidents are rare in the city.

Canner said that victim, who is in his early 20s, was shot in the face and taken to Long Beach Medical Center. On Tuesday, Canner said he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Canner said no other injuries were reported. He said that police are searching for the gunman and that the incident is under investigation.

“We’re using all of our resources to aggressively investigate this,” Canner said. “We can definitely use the community’s help and all information will be kept confidential.”
