The "Jump Start Foundation" will hold its second annual Individual and Relay Triathlon on Sunday, June 26 at Hofstra University. All proceeds will be donated to Mercy Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Rockville Centre, which provides intensive care for premature and sick newborn babies.The triathlon events include a 225-yard indoor pool swim, followed by an eight-mile bike course, followed by a three-mile run on the Hofstra campus, which is a national arboretum. The event will begin at 7 a.m. with individual walk-in registrations accepted until 7:15 a.m. All ages are welcome. A tax-deductible donation is $45 before June 19 and $50 after June 19. Reduced donations will apply for two- and three-person teams. Mercy hosts better breathing club
Support groups and lectures are being offered by the "Better Breathing Club," at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre for patients and family members coping with a respiratory disease. The respiratory diseases could include problems dealing with asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and restrictive lung diseases. Lectures are offered on different issues in respiratory care as well as other related health problems. The group is facilitated by experts in the field of respiratory care and pulmonary rehabilitation, who will be able to offer solutions to the many questions patients may have. Medical studies have shown that patients who are proactive in their health care have a decrease in hospitalization rate as well as an improvement in their quality of life. The group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in Marks Hall at Mercy Medical Center. For further information call (516) 705-1530.
Winthrop offers 'totsaver' program
Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola is hosting a Perspectives in Health program titled "Totsaver" on Tuesday, June 21, to see a free demonstration of infant and child CPR. Held at 7 p.m. at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola, the program will familiarize people with what they need to know during an emergency.Margaret Murphy, RNC, MS, maternal/child health nurse manager, will demonstrate the latest techniques in infant and child CPR, and relief of an obstructed airway. A question and answer period will follow the demonstration. Attendees are asked to arrive at 6:45 p.m. for registration and to park in the rear of the building. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Reservations are required.
